Abstract
- The article refers to a study by the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics, which analyzes cost and location, and mentions the outlook for commercial atomic power, particularly in the United States. Summarized reports discuss the use of atomic energy in the aluminum, chlorine-caustic soda, phosphate, fertilizer, cement, brick, flat glass, iron and steel, railroad transportation, and residential heating industries. Capital charges are a significant component in cost--not the feed materials of natural uranium or thorium. The cost of producing atomic electricity is expected to be stable over the life of an existing facility. Topics are: energy costs in relation to production costs; research methods used by the Cowles Commission; and two factors in the breakdown of estimated costs.
