Abstract

The article reports methods for promoting industrial safety and reducing industrial accidents in the United States. The engineering approach is based on a correlation between safety and efficiency, involves technological and process improvements, and is limited in its effectiveness by the human factor. Group education is a general safety program that is run by a safety engineer and requires top management participation. An individualized training program was used at General Electric. The program required active participation of the foremen and a compilation of job breakdowns for operations under their supervision. The personalized safety training proved effective in groups from both the first and second shifts. Data is provided that shows the financial benefits from safety programs.
