Abstract

The article reports on the outlook for the aircraft manufacturing industry in postwar United States. Short-term reconversion problems include: lower sales volume and revenues plus obsolescence in the transport segment that will require new production; liquidation of wartime business; and disposal of surplus military aircraft. The commercial aeronautics segment is expected to exceed the transport market in ten years. Sales in private aircraft manufacturing will depend on technological progress and government programs for airport construction. Airlines will become competitive with surface carriers and ocean travel if air travel can be made less expensive. Topics include data for military and transport sales estimates and advantages in gasoline turbine power.
