Abstract

The article discusses the smile of former child actress Shirley Temple as it is shown in a photograph of her visit to the White House as a means to analyze emotion in the U.S. during the Great Depression. The author notes that commercial art, entertainment, and politics attempted to foster a sense of confidence and cheerfulness in Americans with such images of and performances of happiness. The author also describes U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt's performances of cheer during this time. He goes on to connect Temple to the imposition of strict child labor laws in the U.S.
