Abstract

The article focuses on relations between business and the press in the United States. Newspaper owners, publishers, and reporters, who are interested in the business community and civic leadership, will sometimes feature business events that are newsworthy. Although relationships between the press and business leaders often develop on the personal level, that does not mean a company will get free publicity or favorable coverage in a news story. Advertising is a newspaper's revenue source so publisher's have little interest in "free space" items. Topics include 12 newsworthy events compiled by Lawrence McCracken, the newspaper's editorial function, the duties and public responsibility of journalists, and advice for dealing with reporters.
