Abstract
- This article focuses on several challenges in effective business management caused by the mental illness of employees. According to the author, managers should not assume that the only remedy for problem employees is counseling by the employee's immediate supervisors. In fact, supervisors are not trained for such a job and could make matters worse. Instead, he suggests, management should employ full-time industrial psychiatrists. The article addresses various fallacies regarding counselling services for mentally-ill employees. The importance of understanding the clinical nature of mental illnesses to provide the appropriate mode of treatment is discussed.
