Abstract

The article discusses innovations in supermarket operations at the time of publication. The author notes a number of revolutions made by the supermarket industry, including the self-service meat and delicatessen departments and the expansion of supermarkets into the sale of wine, liquor, cosmetics and other household products. According to the author, many developments in the industry came as a result of economic pressures exerted by World War II. Due to shortages in labor and merchandise, along with rationing and price control, supermarkets were forced to add other departments to keep overhead costs low.
