Abstract
- The article discusses the St. George's Society of New York and the history of St. George's Day, which the author states is the English national holiday. It examines the history of St. George's Day in England and the attempted revival of St. George's Day by various St. George's societies in Great Britain, Ireland, and the U.S. According to the article, the first celebration of St. George's Day in America occurred in 1762 and various St. George's societies emerged in the U.S. in the 19th century. The article also discusses the invocation of St. George as a nationalistic English symbol and how U.S. St. George's societies impacted the celebrations of St. George in England.
