Abstract
- The article discusses the art criticism of nineteenth century French writer, critic, and poet Théophile Gautier. It examines his engagement with Romanticism and Realism, and comments on his association with the notion of "Art for Art's Sake." The author reflects on Gautier's writings on the Salon art exhibition in Paris, France and notes his open-mindedness and his focus on originality in art. Gautier's critiques of specific artists, including the French painter M. Adolphe Leleux, are also considered.
