Abstract

The article discusses attempts by the California grocery trade to stabilize prices in the industry. In 1906 the California Retail Grocer's Association requested that profitable flour prices be established and maintained. At the 1907 National Grocer's Association convention delegates from the Pacific Coast region asked members to support regulations on manufacturer prices. This was the first significant price fixing movement in the California grocery trade. During a session of the 1937 California legislature a bill was introduced to establish a state trade commission for the purpose of enforcing fair trade practices in the trade.
