Abstract

The article discusses the decentralization of retail trade in Boston, Massachusetts. According to the author, during the decade of the 1930s, retail trade in Boston shifted from the metropolitan area to outlying communities. The author notes a number of factors influencing the purchase of shoes in the city. According to the author, women chose certain stores because of better styles, better quality and lower prices, while men chose stores because of quality, style, a larger assortment and based on the store's reliability.
