Abstract

The article discusses the importance of measuring productivity in distribution. The author believes measuring productivity in distribution is important because it can help in wage negotiations and help maintain a certain work ethic. The author says that to be effective, measures should compare the same task against itself at different times, different ways of doing the same task, and compare different tasks. He feels that existing methods are lacking and presents some new directions for measuring productivity, including indirect input and output, optimum scales of operation, minimizing movement through "distributive space," minimizing the number of transactions, maximizing routine in exchange, reducing the imperfection of markets, and analyzing the dispersion market.
