Abstract

We investigate theoretically coherent pump-probe spectroscopy of four level systems in degenerate double Λ, tripod and N-configurations and discuss electromagnetically induced transparency, lasing without population inversion, effect of laser phase fluctuations and the possibility of realizing negative refractive index.
