Abstract

Novel PS composites with improved combustion properties were prepared by using OctaTMA-POSS and OctaTMA-POSS-based lamellar hybrids. The lamellar hybrids were prepared via template-directed synthesis from OctaTMA-POSS and surfactants. The microstructures of composites were characterized by TEM, which showed that POSS-based fillers dispersed well in the polymer. The combustion properties were evaluated by cone calorimeter, which indicated that peak HRR, CO release rates, and CO concentration were effectively improved. However, the limited oxygen indexes (LOI) of the samples were not changed significantly, and the ignition time in the cone test was earlier than that of pure PS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
