Abstract

The article discusses initiatives undertaken by U.S. military veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and the leaderships qualities that these people have developed. John Gallina and Dale Beatty, two veterans from the U.S. National Guard, founded Purple Heart Homes, which builds handicapped accessible buildings for veterans, while Marine sergeants Jake Wood and William McNulty started Team Rubicon, which provides relief in areas affected by natural disasters. Veterans have formed groups to lobby for each other, entered politics, and performed public services. General David Petraeus, former commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, says that these soldiers have developed important leadership skills while on duty.
