Abstract

The article presents a reaction to an article by John E. Maher regarding the wage pattern in the U.S. from 1946 to 1957, and a reply by Maher to the reaction. According to the authors, Maher challenges the neoclassical productivity theory of wage setting as well as much of the current literature on union wage-setting, as of October 1962. He sees new factors involved in wage rate changes in the country, including the interrelationship between basic industries. The data selected by Maher for his study are tested if they are those near the central tendency. In his reply, Maher claims that the authors made a curious extension and application of his work.
