Abstract

In this article, the author determines the boundaries of materiality in the disclosure of changes made in the application of the generally accepted accounting principles in the United States. The author states that auditing standards refer to an acceptable level of quality which must be maintained in three general areas. The author explains that the companies examined were selected from the 1964 Fortune 600 to yield a sample of companies of sufficient size to be significant. He explains that scholar Victor H. Stempf has asserted that what is good accounting practice for the large sets a standard for all which will pervade the entire economic structure.
