Abstract

The article reports on trends in cephalosporin susceptibility among Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates in the U.S. during 2000-2010 based on data from the Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project (GISP). It provides a background of the emergence of gonococcal resistance to penicillin and tetracycline. It outlines the rate of increase in cefixime minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) among men who have sex with men (MSM). It has found that isolates with decreased susceptibility to cefixime were resistant to tetracycline and ciprofloxacin.
