Abstract
- The article discusses the disciplinary status of information systems using the analysis given by philosophers Michel Foucault and Stephen Toulmin. According to the author, the notion of disciplinarity within the IS community is confusing and the community has conflicting expectations of the implications of becoming a field, discipline, or science. The benefits of becoming a discipline can have different categories, legitimacy, internal coherency, oversight, and social authority.
