This paper introduces a framework for evaluating consumer payments opportunities. It looks at the drivers of change in the way consumers pay and the enablers of change in the way consumers pay. The cornerstones of the payments industry and fundamental change in consumer behaviour are also described. The paper discusses the 'Big 5' game changing payments innovations of the past 50 years in South Africa, and goes on to suggest how the framework could be used to make a prediction about the future of consumer payments in Africa.
