Abstract

The article discusses long-term psychological impact of the bombing of Hamburg, Germany during World War II on German families. Particular focus is given to the transmission of individual and social memory of traumatising events. According to the author, research on this subject confirms earlier scholarship on the disconnect between public remembrance of the Jewish Holocaust and private family histories and viewpoints. Topics discussed include National Socialism, bystanders, and public commemoration of the bombings.
