Abstract

Mass transit is gaining new attention as a way to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and to improve air quality. However, there is some concern regarding the efficiency of transit vehicles, particularly in congested urban areas where air quality is already an issue. Most transit systems run in these urban areas, which face many challenges with regard to reducing emissions and improving vehicles’ impact on the environment. Since the Clean Air Act was developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passed by Congress in 1990, transit systems have been researching and testing alternative fuel vehicles.
