Abstract

The article examines the economic aspects of the French Canadians' separatist demands in Canada. One difficulty is that separatism reflects a general malaise rather than any clearly defined list of complaints. It is believed that federalism in Canada exists solely to guarantee the survival of French culture. The relative importance of the purely economic factors in causing dissatisfaction among French Canadians has yet to be established. The relationship between economic conditions and the form and intensity of intergroup conflicts is a sensitive affair in any country.
