Abstract

The article reflects on the issue of the control of the Panama Canal and the political leadership of Panama chief of government General Omar Torrijos as of 1976. It presents a background of the emergence of Torrijos as the military leader of the country. It describes the foreign relations between Panama and the U.S. under the administration of Torrijos. It argues that the longing for the return of the Panama Canal to Panamanian control is a matter of pride among Panamanians. It also deals with the manner in which the U.S. control of the canal restricts economic development in Panama.
