Abstract

The article focuses on how electronic designers address printed circuit board (PCB) space restrictions while improving electrical performance and reliability. Technology innovations are discussed such as the evolution of decoupling capacitors that freed up PCB space. Two strategies to reduce the equivalent series inductance (ESL) of a capacitor are explained along with the consequences of this evolution. The land-grid array capacitor is presented together with the low-inductance capacitor array, and the feed-thru array.
