Abstract

The article discusses the three principal treatment methods used on fruit and vegetables imported into the U.S. including mechanical, fumigation and irradiation, the use of which has been limited by high costs and poor consumer acceptance. It notes that irradiation is used by importers of tropical fruits and vegetables to access U.S. markets. Itb states that research suggests that consumers will pay more for irradiated food if they believe it is safer.
