Abstract

An encyclopedia entry for Elkanah Williams, an American ophthalmologist, is presented. Born on December 19, 1822, Williams studied medicine with Dr. Isaac Denson of Bedford, Indiana and became a private student of Dr. T. G. Richardson. He introduced the ophthalmoscope to surgeons in London, England and was the first regularly accredited physician in the U.S.
