Abstract

In the field of deep drawing with compliant tools, there are high numbers of variants that influence the process. They are all based on the same concept, to eliminate one of the fixed tool halves, meaning that one of the shaping contours can be replaced by using a rubber pad. The advantage of this method lies for small series production, since the manufacturing cost of these tools is lower by nearly 30% compared to conventional deep drawing tools. Yet, one disadvantage is the short life time of the rubber pad, which must be replaced completely, when worn out. This article presents the concept of a modular rubber pad tool for deep drawing sheet metal blanks. A feasibility analysis presents the achieved results. This paper also shows the potential savings for small-series production with adherence of the consistent quality of the parts. The modular structure reduces maintenance work as well, since it must not be replaced completely due to wear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
