Abstract

The essay discusses the history of early modern French economist François Quesnay and his followers known as the physiocrats. It explores the nature of the relationships between the 18th century scientists and scholars as a classical school of economics. It also considers the social and cultural contexts of the Republic of Letters and the Enlightenment during the reign of French King Louis XV and his court at the palace of Versailles. An overview of economic historiography regarding the physiocrats is presented.
