Abstract

The article reports on the impact of the condition of the book industry's price-support system as consumers rebel against a 20 dollar average jacket price for a bestseller in the U.S. It reveals that discount booksellers have begun to sprout, causing a radical transformation in the way books are distributed and sold. It also notes that the biggest threat to the industry's de facto resale price maintenance system comes from a new breed of discounters who carry a wide range of bestsellers.
