Abstract

The article assesses the decline in earnings of the paper and pulp industry in the U.S. in 1960. The decline is attributed to a failure of papermakers to increase their production capacity in order to supply a growing market, which is increasing at 2.5% annually. This trend is exemplified by newsprint and paperboard producers. An exception are producers of consumer paper products, Scott Paper and Kimberly-Clark, which improved their earnings.
