Abstract
- The essay explores women and their lapdogs in eighteenth and early nineteenth century literature. Some of the works considered include Virginia Wolf's novella "Flush," a biography Elizabeth Barrett Browning's dog; Alexander Pope’s poem "The Rape of the Lock;" and Henry Fielding’s play, "The Modern Husband." Subjects considered include pet-keeping, love, and European cultural history.
