Abstract

The article examines the recurrent metaphors of ingestion, contagion, and reproduction that suggests novelistic mothering as reflected in the review of critic Mary Wollstonecraft for the book "Analytical Review" and in her last fiction book "The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria." It discusses the figurative language in Wollstonecraft's work for the book that suggests a repudiation of mothering and femininity. It explores the maternal metaphors in Wollstonecraft's work and how it relates to sympathy.
