Abstract
- The article discusses the connection between Taiwanese sites of memory and the development of localism in Taiwan. Related to this, the author also analyzes the links between Taiwan's cultural policy, modernity, and globalization. The relationship between Taiwanese collective memory and sites of memory attached to the nation's colonial history is detailed. The rise of localism is examined in relation to the Japanese concept of machizukuri, or neighborhood-making, and community-building, with an emphasis on the role of propaganda in these developments. These issues of collective memory and localism are strongly intertwined with notions of Taiwanese identity and nationalism.
