Abstract
- The article focuses on the effort of the U.S. state legislatures to ease labor shortages through passing new laws and changing old ones in 1943. The enactment of a "work-or-fight" measure is requested by the legislatures for 14 Maryland counties. All work-hour limits for women are suspended in Indiana and Wyoming, while a 48-hour week for women is implemented in Arkansas. Furthermore, a law assuring women equal pay for equal work is opposed by businesses and industries in Washington.
