Abstract

The article analyzes discussions pertaining to the autonomy of Macau within Portuguese historical works. As Macau was a former Portuguese colony, the author is largely concerned with the administration of the colony along with the formation and operations of Macau's municipal government. The impact of self-government on the collective memory of the Macanese is examined by the author in connection to the development of a specific Macanese national identity. The eventual establishment of an autonomous Macau is also described, along with the rise of liberalism.
