Abstract

The article reports on the need for more efficient and lower-cost power plants, which was discussed at the 1946 annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. One of the developments is the lightweight gas turbine of Westinghouse Electric Corp. It is said that the basic elements of the turbine can be widened into sizes of particular interest to power engineers and ship operators. According to Brown Boveri engineers in Switzerland, a compressor-turbine combination in regular service in a locomotive in France produces 4,000 horsepower.
