Abstract
- The article discusses public memory in Korea and the glorification of Korean general Kim Kyŏngsŏ, who fought in the 1619 Ming-Chosŏn joint war against the Jurchen peoples. It examines the Battle at Sarhū and Kim's surrender to the Jurchen. Other figures explored include Kang Hongnip, the supreme commander of the Chosŏn forces, and Kim Ŭngha, a division commander. The author considers an account of the battle by Chosŏn staff officer Yi Minhwan and notes the role of writer Yi Sihang in preserving Kim's memory. The article also reflects on Kim's importance to the regional identity of Korea's P’yŏngan Province.
