Abstract

The article focuses on paintings by 20th-century American artists Childe Hassam and Marsden Hartley. It focuses on American patriotism in several paintings including "Flags on the Waldorf," "Washington's Birthday, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street," and "The Fourth of July, 1916" (The Greatest Display of the American Flag Ever Seen in New York; Climax of the Preparedness Parade in May 1916) by Hassam. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt's restriction on expression of political sentiment to the American flag is discussed in light of an exhibition of paintings in honor of the German military by Hartley. Topics include the Preparedness Day Parade in New York City, preparation of the U.S. for involvement in World War I, and anti-German sentiment in the U.S. in 1916.
