Abstract: We present a TEM study of single wall nanotubes (SWNTs) produced with the electric arc discharge technique using a Ni/Y catalyst (of various relative proportions). The study shows that SWNT ropes grow from metallic nanoparticles which are found to have definite Ni-Y compositions.
