Abstract

The article discusses a decline in the condition of the shipping industry in 1957. Lack of business is one of the reasons for an increase in the number of idle general-cargo ships. There was a drop in rates for U.S.-flag tramp ships from 65,000 dollars a month in 1956 to 45,000 dollars in 1957. New York shipbrokers and European shipowners expect the industry to remain in a slump.
