Abstract

The article discusses the commercial jet age in the U.S. that reportedly began in 1955 with Douglas Aircraft Co.'s building of the first U.S. passenger jet. Speed is said to be the foremost advantage of the jets, 242 of which have been ordered by the world's major airlines. Other reported advantages of jets include their greater range than today's airlines, their burning a less expensive type of fuel, and cheaper operations resulting from the jets' ability to fly more passengers more often at less cost per passenger mile.
