Abstract
- The article looks at the troubles facing metropolitan daily newspapers in the U.S. as of November 19, 1960. For years big city newspapers have been faced with increasing competition and rising production costs. Circulation has also failed to keep pace with growing markets and the result is a steady list of mergers, mechanical consolidations and joint advertising ventures. In some cities old-time papers quietly fold or sell out. The strategy created by Norman Chandler and his managing group to solve the problems facing the Times Mirror Co. is detailed.
