Abstract
- The article focuses on the looming fight in the U.S. Congress over tight money and high interest rates. At issue is the 4.25% ceiling on long-term government bonds, affecting U.S. bonds of more than five years of maturity. The Treasury Department is faced with the challenge of getting an approval for an interest rate high enough to compete in the long-term money market. Republican leaders believe Democrats will support the proposed high interest rate because of inflation concerns.
