Abstract

The article presents information about kudzu, a climbing plant. It came to the U.S. in 1876 as an exhibit at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, which was brought from Japan as a vine that sprouted purple flower clusters in late summer. It was again showed up in New Orleans ten years later at an expo. Over the decades, the vine proved a nutritious forage crop for livestock. By 1945, kudzu covered a half million Southern acres.
