Der transatlantische Magnet. DDR - Kanada: die unmögliche Nähe?

The article discusses relations and perceptions between the countries of Canada and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the 1980s. The GDR's use of such organizations as the League for Peoples' Friendship and the Society for the New Homeland to improve its image is reviewed in terms of its offering study travels to Canadian unionists and German-Canadian Lutheran pastors. Interviews with former GDR officials and diplomats are used to explore the erstwhile GDR-Canada relationship. Differences between the GDR's perception of Canada and the U.S. are remarked on.
