Abstract
- The article discusses the international negotiations in the League of Nations leading up to the granting of independence to the British mandate territory of Iraq in 1932. The diplomacy of Great Britain in seeking to emancipate Iraq while retaining beneficial economic and military rights in the country is discussed in terms of competing visions of international organization among the great powers in the League. British rule in Iraq is discussed, as is the role of King Faisal I, and debates in the interwar period about imperialism, sovereignty, and Arab nationalism.
