Mass Transit Systems.

The article focuses on several initiatives which have been taken for maintaining the economic & environmental efficiency of mass transit system in the U.S. It offers information on the Safe, Accountable, Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity Act - a Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). It informs that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan (ARRA) has authorized 8.4 billion dollars for transit capital improvement projects and for operating expenses. It also tells about the Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) program which has provided 100 million dollars in grants to transit systems which will be used for reducing the energy consumption of the system.
