Abstract

The article discusses the production of syrah in New Zealand. Wine pioneer James Busby played a significant role in introducing syrah to the wine-growing regions of New Zealand. Interest in syrah is said to have started when Alan Limmer, owner of the Mere Road vineyard, produced a Stonecraft wine in 1989. Produced at the Te Awa winery, the Kidnapper Cliffs wine is described as an exercise in terroir-focused winemaking from the Gimblett Gravels sub-region.
