Abstract

The article features the making of the animated feature film "Coraline." The stop-motion animation used by director Henry Selick involves puppets instead of the traditional hand-drawing. Briefings for each scene are presented which included discussions of both basic choreography and emotion, and the creation of an environment for the characters by the art directors and set builders. Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi was hired to establish the visual vocabulary of that environment.
